No gearbox oil lasts forever - even in so-called "fill for life" applications - so changing your gear oil every 2 - 3 years makes sense in order to prolong the life of your transmissions delicate internal components and gear teeth / surfaces.
Gearboxes are tricky and expensive to fix, so it's worth protecting yours with as high a quality gear oil as your budget allows.
