FAQs
What is a DPF?
Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are a popular technology for cleaning air in diesel vehicles. DPFs work by trapping soot and other airborne particles from the exhaust of diesel engines.
Why does the DPF get blocked?
One reason is that the filter becomes coated with soot. This can happen if the engine is not properly tuned or if there is a problem with the fuel injection system. Another reason is that ash from the engine can accumulate in the filter. This can happen if the engine runs too hot or if there is a problem with the combustion process.
When the DPF becomes blocked, it can cause a number of problems. The most common problem is reduced power and poor performance. The vehicle may also start to smoke and there may be a noticeable increase in engine noise.
How do I clear a blocked DPF?
If you notice that your diesel particulate filter (DPF) is blocked, there are a few things you can do to clear it. One option is to use a DPF cleaner. This is a liquid that is sprayed into the exhaust system to help break up the soot and ash that has built up in the DPF. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully before using a DPF cleaner, as some cleaners can damage the emissions system.
Another option for cleaning a blocked DPF is to drive at speed to create excess exhaust emissions. This will help loosen the soot and ash and allow it to be expelled from the vehicle. Finally, you can have your DPF cleaned by a professional mechanic.
How do you know if your DPF is clogged?
Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are a necessary part of most modern diesel engines, trapping soot and other emissions before they can escape into the air. But over time, this ash and soot can build up and clog the filter, reducing its efficiency and causing all sorts of problems for your engine. So how do you know if your DPF is clogged?
One tell-tale sign is that your car will start to smoke more than usual. This black smoke is caused by unburned fuel particles exiting the exhaust pipe, and it’s an indication that your DPF isn't doing its job properly. You may also notice a decrease in performance or an increase in fuel consumption, as well as problems with starting the engine or accelerating.
Can I drive my car with a blocked DPF?
If you ignore a DPF warning light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern, soot will build up in the filter until your car goes into restricted performance mode to prevent damage. If you allow it to build up this badly, then driving at speed alone won't be enough to clear the filter. This is why it is important to maintain the cleanliness of your DPF.
Can DPF cleaner damage the engine?
DPF cleaner is designed to be passed through the engine system and expelled out of the exhaust. Generally speaking, DPF cleaner shouldn't cause damage to any other parts of the engine, but you should do your research to find a DPF cleaner which is compatible with your vehicle - feel free to contact us for advice.
Are DPF cleaners worth it?
If you're presented with the harsh reality of having to pay a steep price to have your DPF replaced, you’ll realise that using DPF cleaner every so often to maintain your car is a small price to pay. In the long run, they are definitely worth it.
