Radiator fans generally consist of an electric motor controlled by the engine control unit, playing an important role in controlling cooling airflow as required.
Older vehicles generally have one disc driven by the engine and another disc connected to the fan blades, both with silicone oil between them. A bimetallic spring ensures that the liquid between the discs is transferred by adhesion to the other disc if cooling is required.
In modern vehicles, an electronically controlled fan coupling is similar in construction, however the rough regulation of the bimetallic spring is replaced by the fine regulation of a motor control unit. The result is a more precise fuel control which in turn saves fuel and relieves the environment.
