Engine oil is significantly more stressed in modern engines as they have to deliver more and more power compared to previous engine generations. The purpose of an oil cooler is to protect the engine oil from excessive thermal load through permanent heat dissipation. The optimal temperature of engine oil is about 90-100°C, and if this rises by just 10°C it can negatively affect the function and service life of the engine oil. 
Therefore, oil coolers are essential in order to maintain the characteristics of your engine oil.
