Brake fluid and clutch fluid are two of the most important automotive fluids that need to be maintained to keep your car running smoothly. When your car's brake fluid and clutch fluid are low, it can lead to decreased braking performance and difficulty in shifting gears. To avoid these problems, it's important to know how to check the levels of these fluids and to refill them when necessary.

We have everything from the most widely used DOT 4 brake fluid, to other poly glycol DOT 3 and 5.1 brake and clutch fluids, as well as specialised and hydraulic fluid options. Not sure which is best for your vehicle? Simply use our registration plate tool above to find a fluid for your motor.

What brake fluid do I need?

There are a variety of brake fluids on the market, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

  • DOT 3: Glycol-based, suitable for older vehicles with lower heat requirements.
  • DOT 4: Glycol-based with a higher boiling point than DOT 3. Common in modern cars.
  • DOT 5: Silicone-based, doesn’t absorb water. May be suitable for vehicles that are driven in very high-humidity environments. We do not stock this fluid.
  • DOT 5.1: Glycol-based, like DOT 3/4, but with higher boiling points and longer lasting. Suitable for high-performance vehicles.

To see what type of brake fluid is recommended for your vehicle, refer to your vehicle handbook or ask us. You can also read our guide which explains brake fluid in more detail.

How much brake fluid do I need?

The amount of brake fluid needed depends on your vehicle’s make and model. For a full brake system flush, most cars require between 0.5 to 1 litre. Some larger vehicles or performance cars may need more. If you're just topping up, you’ll usually only need a small amount — check the reservoir and add as needed, without overfilling.

How to check brake fluid

Locate the brake fluid reservoir which is usually found near the back of the engine bay, close to the driver’s side. The reservoir is typically semi-transparent and marked with “MIN” and “MAX” lines. Ensure the fluid level is between these marks. The fluid should be clear to light amber in colour. If it's dark, dirty, or below the minimum line, it may need replacing or topping up.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Brake fluid should generally be changed every two years with DOT 3 or 4 fluids and every 3 years with DOT 5.1, regardless of mileage.

What is the best brake fluid for racing?

You can't have brake fluid that's "too good". If in doubt, trade up. Look for high boiling points and reputable manufacturers including Motul, Fuchs, Silkolene, and Castrol.

What clutch fluid do I need?

When it comes to clutch fluid, the answer will be inside your owner's manual. Make sure to check this for the correct type of fluid before purchasing any.

What are the different clutch and brake fluid boiling points?

  • DOT 3: 205°C (dry) / 140°C (wet)
  • DOT 4: 230°C (dry) / 155°C (wet)
  • DOT 5 (silicone): 260°C (dry) / 185°C (wet)
  • DOT 5.1 (PAG): 260°C (dry) / 185°C (wet)
  • Super DOT 4: 300°C (dry) / 195°C (wet)
