The GF‑4 specification of engine oils was introduced by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) in the early 2000s. Oils given the GF-4 specification were chosen to provide enhanced oxidation resistance, strict deposit protection, low wear of components, and low temperature performance over the life span of the engine.
Although GF‑4 has since been superseded by GF‑5 and GF‑6A and 6B, oils that meet this specification are still fully effective for engines designed to use them. Modern oils that comply with GF‑5 or GF‑6 are backwards-compatible, offering even greater protection, improved thermal stability, and enhanced compatibility with emission systems.
