Mitsubishi ATF Specifications

We stock a great range of Mitsubishi Gear Fluids... perfect if you've found a Mitsubishi specification in your handbook and you're trying to find the correct lubricants for vehicle.

Maintaining your Mitsubishi’s automatic gearbox depends critically on using the correct Mitsubishi ATF (automatic transmission fluid). This fluid isn’t simply a lubricant; it performs vital roles including hydraulic pressure transfer, clutch-pack lubrication, torque-converter cooling and friction control. Using a fluid outside the required Mitsubishi transmission fluid specification will probably lead to rough gear changes (or no gear change at all), slipping, overheating or reduced transmission longevity.

If you're unsure of what oil is correct for your vehicle, ask the Opie Experts for a transmission fluid recommendation.

Which ATF Does My Mitsubishi Require?

Mitsubishi models call for specific fluid types depending on the year, transmission type and region. Some of the most common specs include ATF SP-III, SP-II, ATF PA and for certain models, ATF J2/J3.

For example:

  • Many older Mitsubishi automatics (pre-2000s) use ATF SP-III or ATF SP-II.
  • Some modern Mitsubishi transmissions, especially CVT or hybrid-type gearboxes, may require ATF PA or a manufacturer-specific fluid.
  • Always check the owner’s manual or service data - or check with us - for your exact model, engine, and transmission - the required Mitsubishi ATF may vary even within the same model series.

Why the Exact Fluid Specification Matters

Using the correct Mitsubishi ATF is crucial because:

  • It maintains the correct friction characteristics for the clutch pack, preventing shudder, slippage and harsh shifts.
  • It handles the thermal loads and shear stresses specific to the gearbox design. An incorrect fluid can degrade faster and lose performance.
  • Manufacturer-approved fluids are formulated to meet Mitsubishi’s seal, material compatibility and long-term durability demands (for example, some fluids are “based on PAO with special additives” for Mitsubishi applications).
  • Using a generic ATF that doesn’t list the Mitsubishi spec may invalidate warranty claims or lead to costly repairs.

Service Interval & Capacity Guideline

While the exact interval and capacity depend on model, transmission type and driving conditions, a typical guideline is:

  • A full ATF change every 60,000-100,000 miles (or equivalent in km) may be standard, though heavy use, towing or urban driving can shorten this significantly.

  • Many Mitsubishi automatic transmissions take in the region of 6-9 litres for a full drain and refill (depending on gearbox size and whether torque-converter and cooler lines are drained). A partial drain/refill may require less.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s procedure for checking fluid level (often requiring the engine warmed up, transmission in park/neutral, and on level ground) to ensure correct measurement.

Selecting the Right Mitsubishi ATF Product

When purchasing ATF for a Mitsubishi vehicle, ensure:

  • The product is clearly marked as meeting the required Mitsubishi specification (e.g., "Mitsubishi Diamond ATF SP-III" or "ATF PA for Mitsubishi").
  • The fluid listing includes your specific gearbox type or model year compatibility (for example, "suitable for Mitsubishi V5AWF transmissions").
  • You keep a record of the fluid change: date, mileage/km, fluid brand and lot number; good practice for future service checks or warranty matters.
  • ... and (obviously) buy it from Opie Oils.
