The API SN specification was introduced by the American Petroleum Institute for 2011 vehicles and older. The specification offers high temperature deposit protection for pistons and rings, stricter deposit build up, and greater protection and compatibility for seals. API SN also provides improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
