What is 0w30 engine oil?

0w30 engine oil is a low-viscosity multigrade oil designed to flow quickly at cold start while maintaining protection once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. The “0w” part refers to cold-temperature flow, while “30” refers to the oil’s viscosity at operating temperature. This makes 0w30 a popular choice for many modern engines where efficient lubrication, lower friction and manufacturer-specific approvals are important.

Before buying 0W30 oil, always check your vehicle handbook or use our vehicle lookup. The correct oil is not decided by viscosity alone. Many cars require a specific manufacturer approval, such as BMW Longlife, VW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault or PSA/Stellantis approvals. Using the correct approved oil helps protect the engine, emissions system, turbocharger and warranty requirements.

What is the difference between 0w30 and 5w30 engine oil?

In the UK climate, 0w30 and 5w-30 behave the same most of the time as 0w30 is only thinner than 5w30 below -15C. In more extreme low temperatures, 0w30 will offer better protection

Unsure whether 0w30 engine oil is best for your car? You'll find which grade of engine oil you need in your vehicle's handbook. Unless your vehicle has been heavily modified, we would recommend staying with the recommended grade/viscosity. Alternatively, use our vehicle reg lookup tool above to find out whether it is suitable for your motor.

If you are comparing 0W30 with 5W30 or another grade, do not choose based on viscosity alone. The right oil depends on your vehicle, engine code, driving conditions and required approvals. If you are unsure, contact Opie Oils for advice before ordering.

Is 0W30 the same as 0W-30?

Yes. 0W30 and 0W-30 refer to the same engine oil viscosity grade. The hyphenated version is commonly used by manufacturers and oil brands, while many people search without the hyphen.
