Bosch RPM sensor has a magnet located on the end of the sensor. This is located next to the ring gear on the flywheel or alternatively fitted to the toothed wheel on the Crankshaft pulley. As the gear passes the sensor a magnetic field changes which sends a signal to the ECU.
