Timing belts are a combination of the characteristics of a timing chain and an auxiliary belt (flat belt). Their design allows them certain advantages over timing chains in some engines.
For example, when very high dynamic stresses occur due to a sudden pressure build-up, timing belts can transmit higher forces as the positive fit of the teeth makes slippage impossible. A chain drive, on the other hand, would be too stiff for this type of drive and snap because of the high load peaks.
