If the vehicle is cold when started, no cooling is required. However, higher cooling performance is required when the engine is subjected to high loads. Sensors detect the vehicle status and the engine management unit then calculates the necessary cooling power.

The electromagnetic water pump allows this custom control, adapted to the cooling performance required by the situation. Depending on the vehicle, up to 1.5 percent fuel can be saved this way. In addition, the environment is also saved, since the emission limits for the Euro 5 and Euro 6 exhaust standards can be achieved.

Switched water pumps also have other advantages. If the water pump is not needed and its output is reduced by up to 50 percent, the energy consumption is correspondingly lower. Thus the saved engine power is available for the drivetrain or other consumption. Conventional, non-switched water pumps, on the other hand, always run at full power.
