Accumulators & Receiver Driers

Moisture and debris are two of the biggest enemies of a healthy air conditioning system, which is exactly what an accumulator or receiver drier is designed to filter out. Fitted between your condenser and evaporator, it stores refrigerant and uses a built-in desiccant to remove any moisture that could damage your compressor or reduce cooling performance. This range covers accumulators and receiver driers to suit a wide variety of makes and models. Shop the full range below.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, accumulators and receiver driers are two slightly different components, each used in a different type of air conditioning system.

A receiver drier is fitted to systems that use a thermal expansion valve, sitting on the high-pressure side of the loop after the condenser, where it stores liquid refrigerant and filters out debris and moisture using an internal desiccant.

An accumulator does a similar job of drying and filtering, but is used in orifice tube systems and sits on the low-pressure, suction side between the evaporator and compressor, where it also helps prevent liquid refrigerant from reaching – and damaging – the compressor.

Whether your vehicle calls for an AC receiver drier, a straightforward car accumulator, or a combined accumulator and receiver drier unit, this range brings together the parts you need to keep your air con running efficiently. A failing accumulator or receiver drier is a common cause of reduced cooling performance, and if left unaddressed, moisture trapped inside the system can lead to costly damage further down the line, including to your air conditioning compressor.

If you're carrying out an aircon receiver drier replacement or a full re-gas, it's always worth replacing this component along with your refrigerant, since it can't be cleaned or reused once it's absorbed moisture. FAQs

What's the difference between an accumulator and a receiver drier?

A receiver drier is used in expansion valve air con systems and sits on the high-pressure side, while an accumulator is used in orifice tube systems and sits on the low-pressure side. Both dry and filter the refrigerant, just at different points in the system.

Do I need to replace my receiver drier when re-gassing my air con?

It's strongly recommended. Once the desiccant inside has absorbed moisture, it can't be reused, and leaving a saturated receiver drier in place can quickly lead to further air con problems.

What are the signs of a faulty receiver drier or accumulator?

Common symptoms include reduced cooling performance, unusual noises from the air con system, and visible signs of a blockage or restriction, such as frost forming on the pipework.
