The purpose of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the internal combustion engine. It achieves this by recirculating a proportion of the exhaust gases through the induction system of the engine. This reduces the oxygen in the air charge to the cylinders which in turn lowers the peak combustion temperature leading to a reduction in the level of NOx being formed. A defective EGR valve not only results in a significant increase in NOx in the exhaust gas, but can also have a negative effect on other components such as the diesel particulate filter.
