What do car additives actually do?

What does a fuel-system cleaner do?
A fuel-system cleaner removes or reduces deposits in parts of the fuel system, potentially including injectors, intake valves, carburettors and combustion areas.
Deposits can disturb fuel delivery and combustion. This may contribute to hesitation, an uneven idle, reduced throttle response or gradually worsening fuel economy.
Most fuel-system cleaners are poured into the tank before refuelling. Filling the tank then helps mix the treatment through the fuel. The treated fuel carries the cleaner through the system during normal driving.
A general fuel-system cleaner is most useful when:

What does an injector cleaner do?
An injector cleaner concentrates on deposits that can interfere with an injector's fuel flow and spray pattern.
Injectors must deliver accurately measured fuel in a controlled spray. Contamination around the injector tip can affect that spray, contributing to poor combustion, hesitation, rough idle, smoke or reduced performance.
Petrol injector cleaners
A petrol injector cleaner is normally added to the fuel tank. It is a reasonable first maintenance step where a petrol engine has mild hesitation or roughness and there is no evidence of a failed injector or ignition fault.

Should I choose an injector cleaner or a fuel-system cleaner?
Choose an injector cleaner when the suspected problem is injector deposits. Choose a complete fuel-system cleaner when you want a broader clean across several parts of the system.
The categories overlap because many general fuel cleaners also contain injector detergents. Avoid using two strong cleaners in the same tank unless their manufacturers expressly confirm that they can be combined.
No bottle can repair an injector with excessive leak-back, a damaged nozzle, an electrical fault or internal wear. Persistent symptoms require diagnosis.
What does a diesel fuel additive do?
A diesel additive may clean injectors, improve fuel lubricity, protect against corrosion, support cleaner combustion or raise the fuel's cetane rating.
Not every product does all of these things. Some are simple maintenance cleaners, while others are concentrated performance treatments or products intended for commercial vehicles.

What does a cetane booster do?
A cetane booster helps diesel ignite more readily after injection, which may improve cold starting and make combustion smoother in a responsive engine.
Cetane is not the diesel equivalent of petrol octane in how it behaves. A higher octane rating makes petrol more resistant to premature combustion, whereas a higher cetane rating generally makes diesel ignite more readily.
A cetane booster is not automatically a DPF cleaner, injector cleaner or winter anti-wax treatment. Some combined diesel additives perform several functions, but the description and instructions should be checked before purchase.
What does a DPF cleaner do?
A fuel-borne DPF cleaner helps soot burn at a lower temperature, making it easier for a diesel particulate filter to complete a regeneration.
A DPF traps soot from diesel exhaust. The vehicle must periodically raise the exhaust temperature and burn that soot away. Repeated short journeys can prevent this process from completing.
A DPF treatment may be useful:
- preventatively on a diesel that regularly makes short journeys;
- before a sustained drive under suitable regeneration conditions;
- where soot loading is at an early or moderate stage;
- after the cause of repeated failed regenerations has been corrected.

Can a DPF cleaner clear a warning light?
It may help when the warning relates to combustible soot and the vehicle can still carry out a regeneration. It cannot remove accumulated ash or repair a fault.
A cleaner is unlikely to solve the problem when:
- the filter is full of non-combustible ash;
- a pressure or temperature sensor has failed;
- the thermostat prevents the engine reaching operating temperature;
- a faulty injector is creating excessive soot;
- the turbocharger or EGR system is malfunctioning;
- the vehicle is in a restricted mode that prevents regeneration;
- the DPF substrate is cracked, melted or otherwise damaged.
A flashing warning light, severe loss of power or several related fault lights should be investigated rather than treated by adding repeated bottles to the tank.
What does an EGR or intake cleaner do?
An EGR or intake cleaner breaks down carbon and oily deposits in the air-intake and exhaust-gas recirculation system.
Exhaust soot can combine with oil vapour in the intake and create a thick deposit. Over time, this can interfere with EGR movement and restrict airflow.
Possible symptoms include:
- hesitation or poor low-speed response;
- sluggish acceleration;
- black diesel smoke;
- an EGR-related fault code;
- uneven running caused by restricted airflow.

What does a GPF cleaner do?
A GPF cleaner is designed to remove or loosen deposits in the gasoline particulate filter fitted to some direct-injection petrol engines.
Some GPF treatments are applied directly to the filter and require access through a sensor port. Do not assume that a diesel DPF fuel additive is automatically suitable for a petrol GPF.
What does a general petrol additive do?
A general petrol treatment may combine light injector cleaning, corrosion protection, moisture control and fuel stabilisation in one maintenance product.
It is a practical option for cars that are used infrequently, make repeated short journeys or would benefit from preventative fuel-system maintenance.

What does an octane booster do?
An octane booster increases petrol's resistance to uncontrolled combustion or engine knock.
An octane booster is most relevant when:
- an engine has been tuned for higher-octane fuel;
- the required premium fuel is temporarily unavailable;
- a modified or high-compression engine is prone to knock;
- the vehicle is being used in competition;
- the product forms part of a known tuning strategy.
It is not usually a useful performance upgrade for an unmodified road car designed to run on ordinary unleaded petrol. The engine cannot necessarily turn extra knock resistance into additional power.
An octane booster is also not automatically a fuel-system cleaner. It will only clean injectors if its formulation contains suitable detergents.
Which fuel additives are useful for classic cars?
Classic-car additives can provide valve-seat protection, protect against the effects of ethanol-containing petrol and stabilise fuel during storage.
What does a lead-replacement additive do?
A lead-replacement treatment protects vulnerable exhaust valve seats in engines originally designed to rely on leaded petrol.

Lead replacement is not required simply because a vehicle is old. Some engines were suitable for unleaded petrol from the factory, while many have received hardened valve seats during restoration. Check the engine specification and rebuild history.
What does an ethanol-protection additive do?
An ethanol-protection treatment helps stabilise modern petrol and reduce corrosion and storage problems in older fuel systems.
Ethanol can attract moisture and may be incompatible with some historic hoses, seals, carburettor parts and tank coatings. An additive can improve protection, but it cannot make a physically unsuitable hose or seal permanently compatible.
Ethanol protection is especially relevant for classic cars, motorcycles, garden machinery and vehicles stored for several months.
For storage, add the treatment to fresh petrol before the final journey. This allows treated fuel to reach the fuel lines, carburettor or injectors rather than remaining only in the tank.
What does an engine-oil flush do?
An engine flush is added to the old oil shortly before an oil change to loosen deposits and suspend contamination so it can leave with the drained oil.
The engine is normally run at idle for the period stated by the manufacturer. The old oil is then drained while warm and the oil filter is replaced.

When is an engine flush useful?
An engine flush can be considered when:
- the service history is uncertain;
- oil changes have been neglected;
- the old oil is heavily contaminated;
- a deposit-related oil-control or hydraulic-tappet issue is suspected;
- the engine is being cleaned before refilling with the correct fresh oil.
Does every engine need flushing at every service?
No. A correctly maintained engine using suitable oil does not necessarily need an additional flush at every oil change.
Engine oils already contain detergent and dispersant additives. Regular servicing with the correct lubricant remains the safest long-term cleaning method.
When should an engine flush be avoided?

What does a cooling-system cleaner do?
A cooling-system cleaner loosens rust, scale, old coolant deposits and oily contamination before the cooling system is drained and refilled.
A cooling-system cleaner is useful when:
- the old coolant is rusty, cloudy or contaminated;
- the coolant type is being changed;
- a radiator, heater matrix or water pump is being replaced;
- the vehicle has suffered from poor coolant maintenance;
- oil contamination entered the system and its mechanical cause has been repaired.

After cleaning, drain and rinse the system as instructed. Refill with coolant meeting the vehicle manufacturer's required specification. Coolant colour alone does not prove compatibility.
What does a coolant enhancer do?
A coolant enhancer supplements corrosion protection or heat transfer, but it may not provide the frost protection of a proper antifreeze coolant.

Radiator stop-leak circulates with the coolant and attempts to seal a small leak where the treatment encounters air or a pressure change.
It may help with:
- a very small radiator pinhole;
- light seepage from a difficult-to-reach joint;
- a minor emergency leak where immediate repair is impractical.
It is not a suitable repair for:
- a split hose;
- a failed water-pump seal;

Which additive should I use for a rough-running petrol engine?
Start with a petrol injector cleaner or complete petrol fuel-system cleaner if the symptoms are mild and deposit-related.
Misfires, warning lights or persistent rough running can also be caused by spark plugs, ignition coils, air leaks, sensors or mechanical faults. Do not continue adding cleaner if the first correctly dosed treatment makes no difference.
