Bilt Hamber Auto-Clay is a paint smoothing bar, designed to get your paintwork looking great and to keep it staying that way. By removing harmful contamination from vehicle paint finishes, Bilt Hamber Auto-Clay improves the durability of your paint work and increases the gloss level of subsequent waxes.
Auto-Clay Medium is designed to be the step between Regular to Soft Auto-Clay. If you haven't used finishing clay on your car before, we recommend the use of the Auto-Clay Regular.
Bilt Hamber clays are supplied as a 200g bar - that's twice the size of many other bars! And unlike most competitors, Bilt Hamber clay bars don't require a separate special lubricant; ordinary tap water can be used. Comes with full instructions.
How To Use Bilt-Hamber's Auto-Clay
Make sure the vehicle panel you would like to treat is out of direct sunlight. It’s best if the work area is relatively cool, but not cold. Before using Auto-Clay, thoroughly wash your car to remove any loose dirt. Divide the clay bar into four pieces. Work with one piece at a time. Wet the surface of the vehicle. It may help to use a plant mister or other means of spraying the surface, as you must keep the car surface wet during treatment to lubricate the car, as Auto-Clay needs to glide across the paint. Mould clay into a ball and flatten into a small disc.
Working on small areas, rub the clay back and forth against the surface of the vehicle with light pressure. Keep the surface thoroughly wetted, Auto-Clay must not be used dry. At first you will hear a sound as the bar pulls the particles away from the paint and also feel a slight resistance. The noise and friction will disappear quickly. After a few passes with Auto-Clay, rub your fingers over the area to feel if the surface contamination was removed. The surface will feel glass-smooth if clear from contamination.
As you work, you should see a reddish brown residue accumulate on the bar, this is the contamination. As the clay bar becomes soiled, simply fold it over squash it out and keep going. Do not use the clay if dropped on the ground, inside or out! The clay bar is good for about four or five cleans of the average sized car. Keep rubbing until all contamination has been removed. Finally, wipe the clay residue off with a soft terrycloth towel. Once the paint is clean, wax your car immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which Auto-Clay do I need: Regular, Medium or Soft?
Regular will be most useful on heavily contaminated vehicles, as it's the firmest clay. Medium is therefore best for moderately contaminated vehicles, and Soft for less contaminated vehicles. It is also important to bear in mind that cold weather will cause the clay to be firmer, while warm weather will make it softer, so it is recommended that the firmness of the clay is selected with temperature in mind. (For example, if the weather is warm and your car is only moderately contaminated, you should choose a Regular clay bar, as the warm weather will soften the bar.)
2. I have a new car, which Auto-Clay should I use and how often should I clay the vehicle?
Use Soft for vehicles with low contamination and repeat every 6-12 months, when you can feel contamination with your fingertips (if the paintwork is tough and grainy).
3. How do I treat my car after using Auto-Clay?
Auto-Clay pulls tiny particles of contamination from the surface of the paint. The best thing to do is to seal these imperfections with a wax or polish, such as Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax or Cleanser-Polish.
4. My Auto-Clay is too firm to mould; how can I soften it so that it can be shaped for use?
To keep the Auto-Clay workable, the recommended method is to let the clay soften in a bowl of warm water. A clay bar is designed to be divided into four pieces and used one quarter at a time. It is suggested that you take two portions of your clay bar, allow one piece to warm in the bowl of water while you use the other. Swap as necessary when the piece in use becomes too firm to be workable.
5. Can the Auto-Clay bar be reused?
The Auto-Clay bar can be used several times. Fold a soiled area into the piece of clay that you are working with and continue. Discard once it looks really grubby, even after kneading and folding.
