Waste Engine Oil Disposal
Oil is a essential part of motoring, but waste engine oil is a pollutant if not properly handled. Oil and water don't mix; just 5 litres of oil can cover a lake the size of two football pitches (Environment Agency figures).
You can help protect the environment by:
- draining your engine carefully so that no oil is spilt
- storing used engine oil in a leak-proof container
- taking it to an oil recycling bank
Remember that pouring oil down drains is
illegal!
Many council household recycling centres will take domestic waste oil. Check with your local authority recycling team, or check the oil bank web site at www.oilbankline.org.uk.The Environment Agency has a free 24 hour emergency hotline for oil spills: 0800 807060.
